Hestemøllestræde

The street profile is designed with a slope away from the buildings on both sides and a crossfall across the wide central zone towards the southern kerbstone. In this way, stormwater is managed along one side of the street, giving the otherwise classical profile a contemporary twist while highlighting visible surface water management. The intention is not to create a traditional separation between sidewalk and roadway, but rather to establish a streetscape with clearly defined zones, ensuring spatial weight and function on both sides through accessibility and water management. The accessible zone is located on the northern side of the street, while the drainage channel runs along the southern side. At the Havnegade end of the street, the future profile is shifted southward relative to the existing street centreline, creating a small public square in front of the monastery garden on the corner facing the Culture Harbour.

The vision for the urban design is a durable and simple streetscape that will remain relevant for many years to come. It features elegant granite paving with a colour variation that complements the diverse materials and colours of the historic façades. The design is flexible and capable of accommodating changing uses without requiring the paving to be altered. The street profile is designed to retain as much rainwater as possible on the surface through a clear and easily understood drainage principle, while the solutions themselves are rational in terms of construction, operation, and maintenance and robust enough to meet the city’s varied needs.

The transformation of Hestemøllestræde serves as a pilot project, with the ambition that its design principles and technical solutions can be rolled out across Helsingør’s historic city centre.
