Havneøen
The development of Havneøen, or Harbour Island, at Esbjerg Strand is driven by the ambition to create an attractive new waterfront district close to both the sea and the city centre. In addition to new commercial developments, a series of diverse public spaces will make the area a destination for residents and visitors alike.
Large and varied squares, maritime activities, tree-lined streets with high-quality paving, and a marina will foster social interaction and support a vibrant and diverse waterfront environment. The area is designed to encourage activity and informal gatherings. New public spaces along the quay and promenade are connected by a 2.5-kilometre activity trail, providing opportunities for recreation, exercise, and play. The entire development is rooted in the unique identity of the Port of Esbjerg, with Havneøen serving as a link between the city and the water.
As part of the project, we introduced extensive green elements into the public realm and developed a bespoke paving design. Special consideration was given to the island’s location within a harsh maritime environment, and the planting scheme has been carefully adapted to these conditions. The project also included the design of a safety embankment adjacent to Kosan Gas. Here, the landscape has been shaped as a grass-covered area incorporating a large infiltration basin. Fencing allows sheep to graze the site, enabling the landscape to be maintained naturally with minimal ongoing upkeep.
Custom-designed concrete paving stones were created specifically for the project, drawing inspiration from the seabed. The paving pattern reflects the rippled formations found on sandy ocean floors, expressed as wave-like motifs in dark and light stone. Stepping stones placed within the planting beds are shaped like sea-worn rocks, evoking the rich stone reef habitats of the seabed.
