Accessibility in Viborg

A project focused on creating a strong and distinctive identity through communication and accessible access to important cultural heritage sites and attractions in Viborg’s historic city centre.

Viborg Municipality, in collaboration with Realdania, Bevica fonden, Arbejdsmarkedets Feriefond, and Vanførefonden, has for several years worked on a project aimed at strengthening the identity of Viborg’s historic city centre. The project includes both communication and physical initiatives, including the creation of accessible routes to key cultural heritage sites and attractions throughout the city centre.

The communication of the new accessible routes is delivered through three different platforms: a printed guide, an app, and a series of physical signs installed at selected locations throughout the city. These three elements have been developed as an integrated system that complements each other and reinforces Viborg’s unique identity.

We have developed a design manual for signage in Viborg as well as a scalable design system for the city centre’s new accessibility signage, including heritage signs, accessibility signs, and arrival totems.

The ambition has been for future signage in Viborg’s city centre to respect the city’s cultural heritage and reflect Viborg’s unique character and identity. The signage therefore consists of discreet, high-quality design elements that allow the qualities of the historic city to remain at the forefront. As a central element of the signage design, a new typeface, Viborg Font, was developed as part of the design manual. The typeface creates a coherent visual identity across all sign types and locations. It was designed by type designer Elias Werner. The signs are produced in tombac, whose material character relates closely to other urban furniture found throughout Viborg’s city centre.

At Domkirkepladsen and Hjultorvet, information totems featuring tactile bronze models of the city centre have been installed. These models can be explored by touch, allowing visitors to experience the city's buildings, urban structure, and the relationship between its public spaces and streets.
Viborg Municipality received the European Commission’s Special Heritage Award as part of the 2019 Access City Award for the project “Accessibility in Historic City Centres – New Pathways to Viborg’s Cultural Heritage.”
