Rabalderstræde

The square’s defining feature is its concrete carpet. This draped surface functions as a multifunctional piece of urban furniture, inviting creative use and interpretation depending on how everyone chooses to engage with its form.

Located in a former industrial district, the new square connects the buildings on either side of Rabalderstræde and creates a strong visual link that emphasizes the relationship between the area's different functions: Musicon House, serving as an administrative building, and The Laboratory, a space dedicated to creative expression. This connection playfully and boldly explores alternative solutions. The meeting between the hard concrete material and the flowing, undulating form creates a sense of movement and momentum, expressing the spirit, energy, and creativity that define Musicon.

The wave-like forms incorporate both seating and reclining heights and can also be used for activities such as skateboarding. The design is intentionally ambiguous; it is not intended to serve a single predetermined purpose. Instead, users are invited to become co-creators of the space, which continually changes character through its diverse patterns of use.

Vehicles can pass through the area, but the raised edges of the concrete carpet also serve as traffic-calming elements. Stormwater is managed through oversized drainage channels integrated into the kerbstones, running beneath the carpet and following the sloping terrain toward the sculptural water staircase in Rabalder Park, before ultimately collecting in a purpose-built lake.

Rabalderstræde thus functions as a multifunctional urban space where people can meet and interact across ages, interests, and activities. It is a public space designed for year-round use and one that remains consciously rooted in its industrial heritage and context.
