Næsbjerg Churchyard
In the village of Næsbjerg near Varde, the churchyard’s outdoor areas have been transformed with a focus on green structures, clearer spatial transitions, and improved arrival experiences, all of which strengthen the overall cohesion of the site. The project introduces new spatial qualities, enhanced biodiversity, and a more welcoming setting for both the churchyard and the parish hall.
The churchyard and the areas outside the dike previously appeared as a somewhat monotonous landscape, characterised by large residual areas covered with gravel, a general uniformity, and a lack of spatial hierarchy and clear transitions between burial grounds, gathering spaces, arrival areas, and traffic connections. The transformation of the outdoor spaces centres on a comprehensive greening strategy for both the churchyard and the arrival area at the parish hall, as well as along the main street.
Through a carefully developed planting strategy, the project introduces greater experiential richness and character by creating a variety of spaces that differ in scale and expression. A new framework of Swedish whitebeam trees has been planted along the dike, reinforcing the boundary of the churchyard and mediating the transition to the main street to the south. Within the churchyard, flowering trees and ground cover planting have been introduced in vacant areas, while new accessible granite paving has been installed along the primary pathways, extending into a forecourt at the church entrance.
The area surrounding the parish hall has undergone a transformation, including a new car park and arrival space with a greener character. To the north, an existing lawn that had remained largely unused has been activated and reimagined. The area now accommodates a new meeting place, a green experiential trail, and new facilities for the gravediggers. As part of the Parish Council’s commitment to the Green Church initiative, all new paved surfaces incorporate Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS), and the planting strategy prioritises biodiversity and native species.
