Karlslunde Park Cemetery

The cemetery extension is designed as a green, nature-oriented burial ground, conceived as a continuous and verdant landscape in which individual burial areas are organised as small groves of trees and shrubs. These are framed by peripheral planting that provides screening from neighbouring properties to the south and the open agricultural fields to the north. Internally, the groves define a central visual corridor that connects the open landscape to the west with views towards the tower of Karlslunde Church.

As part of the first phase, the first three burial groves will be established, together with roads, paths, an arrival plaza, seating opportunities, parking facilities, and operational service areas for cemetery maintenance. The project also includes site preparation for a future building in the north-eastern part of the site, which will eventually accommodate service facilities and consultation rooms.

The green and nature-based approach reinforces the contrast between the village and the surrounding countryside. At the same time, it reflects a strategic decision to expand the cemetery’s range of burial offerings. The introduction of more naturalistic and landscape-based burial spaces responds to growing demand and complements the more formal and traditionally maintained burial sections found in the existing cemetery.

The overall concept for the new cemetery extension therefore brings together both historical and contemporary elements. It tells the story of the cultivated agricultural landscape, the historic radial land division patterns, the village structure, and the transition in scale from intimate local spaces to the vast surrounding landscape. In the new cemetery, however, the historical meets the contemporary, and the cultivated gives way to the natural. Lush vegetation, biodiversity, and sustainability become central themes, enriching the site with a distinct identity and meaningful experiences.
