Fjord Strategy for Mariagerfjord Municipality

We have developed a Fjord Strategy aimed at highlighting the strengths of Mariagerfjord Municipality’s location and enhancing the accessibility and usability of the fjord. The strategy provides a roadmap for a visionary, action-oriented, and coordinated effort that strengthens a shared vision for Mariager Fjord.

The Fjord Strategy establishes a common direction for how Mariager Fjord can become a natural focal point in the future development of Mariagerfjord Municipality. The fjord holds significant untapped potential for attracting and retaining residents, strengthening tourism and industry, and enhancing destinations that draw visitors to the area.

Mariager Fjord is more than a defining element of local identity; it is the very foundation of Mariagerfjord Municipality. What makes the fjord unique is the way it reflects a remarkable cross-section of Danish history. From the formation of the landscape through the Viking Age, the development of fisheries, proud boatbuilding traditions, industrialization, land reclamation, the ecological decline of the fjord, its subsequent restoration, and its emergence as a growing tourist destination.

These historical milestones are all connected to the fjord, and the strategy seeks to use this heritage to create a shared narrative: The Fjord of Stories. Our own lifetime represents only a small chapter in this long history, and for that reason Mariager Fjord must be treated with respect so that it can be passed on in good condition to future generations. This sustainable perspective is embedded throughout the Fjord Strategy.

The strategy culminates in Five strategic recommendations, an action catalogue identifying key projects as well as three inspirational pilot projects illustrating how the vision can be realizedThe Fjord Strategy was developed through an extensive stakeholder engagement process, ensuring broad participation and local ownership throughout its preparation.

The Municipal Council approved the Fjord Strategy in the autumn of 2021.
