Byens Plads in Lillerød

LYTT’s proposal for the “Town’s Square” in Lillerød unifies Lillerød Town Centre and combines culture, exercise, and knowledge in three urban spaces under one.

The “Byens Plads" (the "Town’s Square”) is, on the whole, areawise the size of Rådhuspladsen (the town hall square) in Copenhagen. Consequently, we suggested to divide the square into three smaller spaces, which related better to their individual context and scale of the surroundings in Lillerød Town Centre; Kultorvet (the Coal Square), Bibliotekshaven (the Library Garden) and Sportspladsen (the Sports Square). The three areas link and relate to the existing cultural institutions: the theatre Mungo Park, Allerød Library and the cinema and FH sports hall. To meet the challenges of connecting the three functionally divided zones across buildings and roads, the vision plan provides for both the demolition of existing buildings and the construction of new ones in order to create smaller urban spaces at the large square. The three spaces will function as independent urban spaces as well as become connected by a unifying planting and pavement strategy. This defines an overall multifunctional urban space with square, garden, and space that allows for activity, stay and play, while the green premises of the place are made visible.

The vision sketch is a result of the cooperation between Allerød Municipality, user involvement and LYTT Architecture. It has subsequently been updated in cooperation with Primus and Rytter Architects in connection with their project design of the extension and rebuild of the library and activity house.
