Tvis Mølle Nature Laboratory
At Tvis Mølle, visitors can experience magnificent and varied natural landscapes as well as cultural heritage features in a setting that directly reflects the area's fascinating geological and historical formation. Holstebro Municipality’s ambition has been to establish a Nature Laboratory that is not merely a communication centre, but a true learning laboratory offering experiences and activities for both existing and new users of the landscape.
We have developed four themed learning laboratories, established as four platforms within the landscape and brought together through a strong overarching concept. Each laboratory focuses on one of the key themes connected to understanding the area’s inherent and potential qualities: Nature, Water, Cultural Heritage, and Health.
The laboratories are designed as pavilion-like structures that are carefully integrated into the beautiful landscape. They are located close enough to one another to create synergy and coherence between them. A new primary path has been established through the area, connecting all four laboratories and making it possible to visit and use each of them during a visit.
Together, the four laboratories function both as landmarks along a route through the area and as platforms for experiences linked to specific places and themes:
- The Cultural Heritage Laboratory, located at the arrival area, contains meeting facilities, a stage for exhibitions and presentations, and related functions.
- The Water Laboratory, situated by the stream, is designed as a bridge structure for fieldwork focusing on water quality and aquatic animals.
- The Nature Laboratory, located in the grassland, functions as an outdoor workshop with an outdoor kitchen, focusing on plants and species.
- The Health Laboratory, situated within the forest plantation, focuses on movement, pulse, meditation, and tranquillity.
A defining principle of Tvis Mølle Nature Laboratory is its focus on inquiry-based and experimental learning. Visitors learn about nature by being immersed in it, using their bodies to explore, experience, and investigate phenomena at a one-to-one scale. The goal is for learning to become embedded through personal experiences that create presence and awareness in the moment, while fostering lasting attitudes and values over time.
