Sundbyvester Square

At Sundbyvester Square on Amager, we have carried out a comprehensive renovation of the playground and reorganized the square to create a more welcoming and lush public space.

Building on the existing layout of Sundbyvester Square, we developed a project that breaks up the extensive hard-surfaced areas through a series of targeted interventions. Paved surfaces have been replaced with planting, restoring Sundbyvester Square as the green oasis it once was. Great emphasis has been placed on diversity in species and character, with planting selected strategically to strengthen and support the square’s different spaces and activities.

The playground has been reorganized into clear zones, with parkour facilities, fitness equipment, and ball-game areas for older children and adults located in the southern section, while play facilities for younger children are concentrated in the north.

The Urban Square at the centre is framed by perennial planting beds and trees along its edges. At its heart lies a gravel surface with large, high-canopy trees that create space, shelter, and shade while encouraging social interaction and recreation. The elevated tree canopies ensure that the Urban Square remains an open and flexible space, suitable for both flea markets and small group gatherings around the circular Copenhagen benches.
