Student Housing, University City Aarhus

132 new student housing units have been created in University City Aarhus, housed within Kay Fisker’s former patient hotel from 1941. Here, history and modern comforts are brought together. The courtyard offers spaces for relaxation, sports facilities, and green areas, creating a vibrant setting for student life, leisure, and community.

The outdoor areas are designed as an active and lively courtyard that supports social interaction and everyday life. Benches, tables, and activity options such as basketball and table tennis make the courtyard a natural meeting place, while lawn areas and newly planted oak trees will contribute to a pleasant microclimate over time.

The project is carefully adapted to the overall character of the University City through material choices and detailing that create a sense of cohesion. Large planting beds with light concrete edges provide both privacy and a sense of safety for residents, while defining transitions between private and more public zones.

The planting consists of robust, native species with long flowering seasons, contributing to both variation and experiential quality. The courtyard connects directly to the University Street, allowing passersby to naturally engage with the recreational space and reinforcing the perception of the student housing as an integrated part of University City.

The student housing is part of University City and the overall transformation of the former Aarhus Municipal Hospital into a cohesive university environment. The project is part of a broader network of public spaces, squares, and functions that together shape the new campus.
