Landscape Atlases
We have developed four landscape atlases to form the foundation for new local plans in selected holiday house areas in Northern Jutland. These atlases describe the landscape, architectural, and structural characteristics of the areas, building a deeper understanding of what should be preserved and strengthened within each location.

Preserving Local Character While Adapting to Modern Needs
There are approximately 200,000 holiday houses in Denmark, many concentrated in unique coastal landscapes. Of these, 9,000 are located in Jammerbugt Municipality, particularly along the popular holiday destinations of Blokhus and Saltum Beach. However, a significant portion of the housing stock is now aging and in need of renovation. At the same time, Danish holiday house culture has changed significantly since the first ones were built in the 1950s. Unlike back then, when they were only used during the summer months, today’s holiday houses are used year-round. This shift has created a growing expectation that holiday houses should offer the same level of comfort and aesthetics as primary homes.
To ensure that these evolving demands for increased size and comfort do not compromise the unique qualities and shared landscape value of these areas, we have developed the landscape atlases. These atlases are specialized mapping and site analyses that form the basis for a range of landscape and urban planning recommendations concerning the renovation, extension, and remodeling of existing holiday houses in the region.
Analytical Foundation for Local Planning
The atlases describe the landscape, architectural, and structural characteristics of each area, establishing a clear understanding of what should be strengthened locally. Their subdivision of the regions serves as a basis for the municipality’s new local plan boundaries, and their content informs the development of new local planning regulations. As such, the atlases represent expert assessments that serve as a foundation for the municipality’s planning work and are used daily in local planning, exemption applications, and building permit processes.
A Tool for Citizen Engagement
In holiday house areas, many stakeholders must be involved in the planning process, including property owners and homeowners' associations. In this context, the atlases act as tools for communication and citizen engagement, clearly illustrating the wide variety of character, expression, and structure found within the holiday house areas. This diversity supports different visions and directions for development. The atlases help residents gain a better understanding of their local area and of the surrounding landscape values that define and enhance their holiday house environment.
