Kolding Harbour Areas
LYTT, NIRAS and KUBEN have conducted an analysis and shown strategic opportunities for the development of Kolding’s Harbour Areas with the aim of realising the vision “More city – greener commercial harbour”.
In the project, we have examined and communicated strategic opportunities for the development of Kolding’s harbour areas. The work is based on the following overall and equal themes: development of the harbour, development of the city, sustainability, infrastructure, and climate adaption. The themes have formed a common thread throughout the work and in the final product.
The vision for Kolding’s Harbour Areas, “More city – greener commercial harbour”, brings together and communicates a physical vision that shows a common direction for the development of Kolding’s harbour areas. The vision forms the foundation of the project and identifies eight development tracks: the commercial harbour, urban development, urban spaces, the promenade, the river, Alaska, infrastructure, and climate adaption. Each development track has specific conditions, potentials, and development opportunities. Each constitutes important pieces of the overall puzzle, while at the same time being able to develop independently of one another. This makes the vision both robust and dynamic. For each development track, strengths and potentials are described and supported through examples and concrete recommendations. In this way, a natural development of the project area over the coming years is ensured.
For example, the goal for the urban development is that it should start from within and move outward, so that the city can function and develop in a natural way. The potential lies, among other things, in the fact that the area is an urban hinge between the city and the harbour areas and has a central location between the existing city and the harbour. For that reason, our recommendations are to create temporary activities, strengthen the central street, and create an urban space to bring city life down to the harbour.
Within the project, there is a shared interest among Kolding Municipality, Kolding Harbour, the companies at the harbour, and the citizens of the city in finding the best solutions for all parties. In the process, a storing focus has been on understanding the hierarchy of actors and identifying how stakeholders could see shared opportunities for development. Throughout the entire project, dialogue has been the primary tool, which has directly influenced how the project has taken shape during the process.
Prior to the development of the vision, preparatory reports and an opportunity catalogue have been prepared. The preparatory reports summarise technical conditions that affect the project area, as well as urban, landscape, and spatial considerations that should be further developed. The opportunity catalogue describes various principles for climate adaption.
