Flodlejet Randers

Flodlejet, literally meaning ‘the riverbed,’ is a new urban and landscape development along the Gudenå River. Flodlejet will comprise a series of urban and landscape spaces that unify the districts of Randers, establishing the area as a cohesive and connecting destination. With this project, we aim to activate life by, on, and within the water. Our goal is to complement and enhance the vibrancy of Randers’ city centre through entirely new experiences and ways of gathering—always with water and nature as the focal points.

At Flodlejet, the delta is returned to Denmark’s only river, the Gudenå, amplifying the site’s natural and experiential qualities along the water’s edge. Flodlejet assembles the river’s spaces into a distinctive urban and landscape realm stretching across the river valley. It will become a unique meeting place where city districts and urban life merge into a new destination, bridging the historic old town, the emerging city, and the future River City— all intimately connected to the water. Here, a fresh way of experiencing the city unfolds, simultaneously urban and immersed in nature.

The development of Flodlejet is rooted in the DNA of Randers—city, delta, nature, and harbour. By building upon these “cultural traits,” the city’s authenticity is strengthened, replacing the current “in-between” character of the area with a locally anchored fusion of nature and urban culture, where genuine natural elements and carefully selected quality materials create a coherent whole.

Across Flodlejet’s surfaces, a variety of functions supporting river life are integrated. This includes a new building on the Bolværksgrunden site, designed to accommodate gatherings, activities, and interpretation. Moreover, Denmark’s first and only river bath will be established, alongside seating areas, equipment storage for water activities, a sauna, arrival plazas, landing stages, walkways, changing rooms, and viewing platforms.

Bolværksgrunden
Bolværksgrunden serves as a central hub where the medieval town, traffic flows, the River City, and the river itself converge. Today, the area is characterized by its proximity to the river, the harbour’s grand scale, and the heavily trafficked, barrier-forming Havnegade and Randersbro streets.

The new master plan for Bolværksgrunden provides storm surge protection for Randers’ city centre while simultaneously forging stronger connections between the city, the river, and the River City. A sequence of new urban spaces will create varied settings for vibrant city life along the river. The harbour atmosphere—a vital part of Randers’ heritage—is preserved and enhanced through the reuse of materials such as cobblestones and railway tracks, along with an intact quay edge. At the same time, the harbour’s large scale is balanced by smaller, intimate resting spots and plazas designed on a human scale, creating harmony within the spaces.

Tronholmen and the River Bath
At the heart of Tronholmen, a new island will be developed offering a wealth of recreational opportunities—an equal counterpart to the urban development on Bolværksgrunden. This new river destination invites close engagement with the river and surrounding landscapes. Meadow habitats are preserved, opening up myriad experiences both on land and in the water. Here, everyone can approach the river intimately, feel the current, and enjoy amenities such as changing rooms, a sauna, and viewpoints.

As the only location in Denmark to offer bathing facilities in flowing river water, Tronholmen presents a rare and unique opportunity for visitors and locals alike. It will become a new gathering point where the city meets the water and where the forces of nature can be experienced up close.
