Faaborg Railway Station – New Residential District in Faaborg
Faaborg is on the threshold of an exciting transformation as the former railway station area is redeveloped into a new, exclusive residential district with a unique location between the fjord, the historic town centre, and the vibrant harbour environment. Here, a varied development of apartments, townhouses, and shared facilities creates the framework for a contemporary urban life close to the water — placing nature and community at its centre.
The area is organised around a green communal garden, a lush gathering space offering room for play, relaxation, and informal encounters. Small squares, narrow streets, and passages create intimate urban spaces, while paths and stepping stones across the restored Sundrenden canal connect the neighbourhood. Water becomes a central feature, with a shallow reflecting basin adding atmosphere and reinforcing the connection to the fjord.
The architecture draws on Faaborg’s distinct urban character. The buildings reinterpret the town’s traditional houses in a contemporary way, with brick façades and roofs forming a cohesive whole with an elegant and timeless appearance. The development rises to two to three storeys, ensuring it integrates naturally with the historic scale of the town while preserving key visual connections to the water.
The Railway Station and the Post Office — two significant buildings in the city’s history — are carefully transformed for new uses. They may accommodate housing or possibly a hostel, bringing new life and activity to the area while preserving its cultural heritage.
The landscape design supports both community and biodiversity. Trees, flowering shrubs, and green niches provide shade and shelter, while private gardens adjacent to ground-floor dwellings create a natural transition between public and private spaces. Paving materials vary from gravel and cobblestones to tiles and asphalt, always with respect for both functionality and the town’s aesthetic character.
Traffic is managed via a simple one-way road, ensuring the area remains safe and calm. All surfaces are naturally drained towards the Sundrenden canal, where water is directed onwards to the fjord.
With this new residential district at the harbour, Faaborg gains a modern and vibrant neighbourhood that connects town and waterfront, creating attractive settings for both residents and visitors.
