Area Renewal in Tange

Tange is beautifully situated by Lake Tange and the Tange Stream - surrounded by rolling terrain and forested slopes. Based on these qualities, the area renewal program in Tange works to strengthen and connect the town’s landscape and recreational assets through a series of strategic initiatives.

The project has been developed in close dialogue with engaged residents and local stakeholders and is rooted in the ambition to create a holistic, site-specific, and user-driven development. The goal is to create a visible and tangible uplift for Tange as a whole - not through isolated projects, but through interconnected interventions that together establish a shared identity in the public space. A consistent material palette and a distinctive seating element - adapted to each site’s specific landscape context - tie the three key areas together: the Rowing Club, the Square, and Dværgbakken. The seating structure is carefully designed with respect for terrain, orientation, and views, functioning as both a recognizable and site-adapted feature in each location.

A Strong Local Steering Group
The project has been developed in close collaboration with Viborg Municipality and a local steering group formed during the development of the Local Development Plan. The group has represented a broad range of interests within the town and has played a central role in prioritizing, refining, and anchoring the project’s content. Local ownership is a key value in the area renewal effort and a prerequisite for ensuring that the spaces are actively used, maintained, and further developed collectively.

The Rowing Club - Seating with a View
At the rowing club, a sculptural seating structure in untreated oak is installed, oriented toward the south and arranged around a prominent ash tree. From here, views open out across Lake Tange and along the Tange Stream. The seating appears as an inviting and site-specific element that encourages rest and lingering.

The Square - A Green and Sheltered Pocket
At the Square, the design language of the seating element is continued but adapted to the more urban character of the site. The structure is designed without the “arms” seen at the rowing club and is supplemented with a backrest, creating a sheltered and comfortable space for staying. Existing parking areas are removed and planted, while the elevated part of the square is reimagined as a green edge that shields from the road and adds an urban garden kind of atmosphere.

Dværgbakken - A Hidden Outdoor Space
Dværgbakken is a green gem in the heart of the town. Tucked away from the main road, yet rich in character and potential. Here, the seating structure is shaped as a fan-like arc that follows the terrain, providing shelter, sunlight, and views. Its design allows for both individual use and group gatherings, whether for short stays or longer visits, without compromising the quiet and intimate scale of the space.

The area renewal program was politically approved in May 2025.
