Aarø Nature Island

We have developed a preliminary proposal based on a strategic spatial plan for Aarø. The proposal builds on the plan’s key elements and presents three central initiatives: a new meeting point at Aarøsund Harbor as a landmark, a renovated and extended arrival building at Aarø Harbor, and an updated bird observation tower on the eastern side of the island. Additionally, we improve accessibility through a strengthened trail network that connects the island’s key locations.

Cohesive design elements

To create a harmonious experience, the different initiatives of the project are designed to demonstrate a clear coherence across Aarø’s various environments. Each key location has its own unique function and character, while also being part of a unified design family. The common design elements are inspired by the island’s existing qualities, reflected in the choice of colors, materials, forms, and construction methods. While the harbor structures use robust materials like timber and concrete, the natural areas are characterized by untreated wood and stone. This subtle variation ensures a harmonious and site-specific experience across the island.

Renovation and extension of the arrival building at Aarø Harbor

As a central part of Aarø Harbor, the new features of the arrival building are carefully integrated into the existing environment. The architecture is inspired by traditional bulhouses, and the building rests on a solid foundation that both protects against storm surges and provides visual anchoring. The black-stained wood facade creates an elegant contrast to the large, unifying roof and emphasizes the building’s connection to the site’s maritime history.

A new meeting point at Aarøsund Harbor

The new meeting point at Aarøsund Harbor is a natural hub for visitors and acts as the gateway to Aarø. The welcoming public space offers room for staying and learning about the area's nature and history. The artwork The Beached Whale serves as a central feature and conveys stories about Aarøsund, the deep strait, and the island’s rich nature in an engaging way.

Updated bird observation tower on Aarø

On the eastern side of the island, the existing bird observation tower is renovated to improve both the view and accessibility. A new lower level allows visitors to experience wildlife and plant life at eye level from the dike, while a spiral staircase leads to an upper viewing shelter. From there, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the sea and the surrounding farmland, which is gradually being restored to its natural ecosystems.

Improved trail network

As part of the overall vision, the island’s trail network is strengthened to create walking routes beyond the existing road system. These trails connect the island’s unique natural landmarks and allow visitors to experience Aarø’s distinctive landscape up close. The new network ensures that the island’s key locations remain easily accessible to all.
