Vejlby Vest - Development Plan
Vejlby Vest is an area with a strong sense of community and a history of self-determination, initiative, and a willingness to shape its own development. These unique qualities form both the starting point and the driving force behind the renewal of Vejlby Vest under the heading New Energy for the Community.
In the future, the community and a high-quality everyday life closely connected to nature and the surrounding city will ensure that Vejlby Vest remains an open and safe neighbourhood.
Today, the area faces renovation needs and challenges that require action. Vejlby Vest is therefore being reimagined through a development plan aimed at transforming it into an attractive, mixed-use urban neighbourhood in Aarhus. The plan forms the foundation for the future of Vejlby Vest - building on the area's strengths while creating new opportunities. Existing resources and qualities are leveraged, while connections between Vejlby Vest and surrounding urban areas in Aarhus are strengthened. With a broad focus on strategic, social, and physical initiatives, the plan will transform the neighbourhood on multiple levels.
Urban Strategic Initiatives
The urban strategic initiatives aim to create better cohesion within the district by improving cycling and pedestrian connections and establishing a central recreational area. The centrally located park will serve as a gathering place, inviting both residents and visitors in and opening the area toward the rest of Aarhus.
Social Initiatives
The social initiatives focus on strengthening the community and fostering new relationships. A district association will be established, with an emphasis on promoting neighbourliness among both existing and new residents. New pioneers are actively encouraged to take part in the community to contribute to the neighbourhood’s development and dynamism.
Physical Initiatives
The physical initiatives focus on biodiversity, rainwater management and climate resilience, safety-enhancing measures, sustainable construction, reuse, and circular economy principles. In addition, Vejlby Vest has a strong tradition of resident democracy, which has been an integral and active part of the development plan process. The next step is for various committees to help refine elements of the plan, ensuring that the detailed design reflects residents’ needs and wishes.
