UC Syd Kolding
In Kolding, an outdoor space has been created that connects UC Syd with the surrounding educational institutions, providing room for both academic focus and social interaction.
Campus Kolding today appears as a unified campus area with a wide range of educational institutions. UC Syd Kolding stands as a prominent element within the campus, closely connected to the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). The campus plaza functions as the unifying urban space, extending across Buen and creating connections to both the Design School and Kolding Educational Center. On the north side of SDU lies IBA Academy of Professional Higher Education, which—across the river—is an integrated part of the overall campus environment.
Between SDU and UC Syd, a series of gently sloping “islands” has been established, forming a green and inviting public space. The hills are planted with a variety of tree species such as field maple, pine, serviceberry, and honey locust, which provide shelter from the wind and create small, sensory spaces between the large building volumes. Each island accommodates different functions inspired by the activities within UC Syd’s building.
Adjacent to the drama and music rooms, a green island with terraced seating has been created—a small amphitheater that invites outdoor teaching and performances. Two other islands encourage rest and relaxation, featuring hammocks beneath the tree canopies and space to enjoy lunch outdoors. The multi-staircase extends from the interior of the multipurpose hall and serves as a space for movement, performances, and informal stays. Between the seating steps are planted beds with perennials and varied grass.
One of the islands is designed as an outdoor laboratory supporting teaching in outdoor life and nature. Here, students can plant and harvest vegetables, keep chickens, and gather around a fire.
The existing water reservoir is integrated as an active part of the recreational landscape surrounding the campus. The basins function as natural stormwater ponds, collecting and delaying rainwater during heavy rainfall events. At the same time, they contribute to increased biodiversity and enhance the experiential quality of the green surroundings.
