The Kongeå Path

In this project, we have assisted Kolding Municipality in mapping and assessing the nature along the Kongeå River, with a focus on the careful integration of paths, bridges, and wayfinding elements into a landscape of high biological quality.

The project’s initial analyses and site inspections have ensured a sensitive integration of the trail route into the river valley’s distinctive landscape. New routes have been developed through preliminary investigations and feasibility studies of private land parcels in the lowland areas of the Kongeå, with dialogue and collaboration as key elements in the process. As part of the process, we have prepared mapping material for use in the dialogue with the 12 involved landowners and facilitated meetings with local associations, citizen groups, and enthusiasts—the future users of the path. Local engagement has been crucial in anchoring the project and ensuring that the Kongeå Path becomes a recreational offer with strong local support.

The Kongeå Path is established as a footpath that follows the course of the river from Vamdrup to the Wadden Sea north of Ribe. West of Vamdrup, the path moves through a designated lowland area, where ditches, tributaries, and wet meadows are crossed via boardwalks, footbridges, and two longer timber bridges across the Kongeå itself. The many crossings over soft terrain and water highlight the landscape’s fine variations in terrain and strengthen the experience of nature and landscape in the open valley.

All elements are executed in timber and follow a coherent design that has previously been realised on sections further west, thereby creating a recognisable identity for the Kongeå Path along its entire length. The structures are adapted to future climate changes and can be both relocated and height-adjusted in response to a wetter landscape.

All bridges, benches, and wayfinding elements have been designed by architect Jesper Danø.
