Nysum Gravel Pit

The Nordjylland Region has initiated an exploration of future uses for Nysum Gravel Pit once mineral extraction comes to an end within the coming years. The project focuses on developing the area into a recreational landscape close to nearby communities, with enhanced natural qualities, increased biodiversity, and communication of the site’s cultural history.

Nysum Gravel Pit is located between the villages of Nysum and Ravnkilde in a landscape characterized by a river valley, open agricultural fields, and smaller, scattered settlements. The site borders Simested Stream to the west and lies close to Rold Forest, Mariager Fjord, and the hiking trail Hærvejen, placing the gravel pit within a landscape rich in natural and outdoor recreational qualities. Its close relationship to the surrounding villages, combined with existing activities and connections, provides a strong foundation for developing the area into a locally anchored recreational landscape with regional appeal.

The work is based on the transition from active mineral extraction to site restoration and ultimately to a long-term future use of the area. The project investigates how the distinctive character of the landscape can provide a framework for new recreational opportunities while creating favourable conditions for nature’s own development. An important aspect of the project is an open and inclusive process, in which neighbours, local associations, and other stakeholders are invited to participate in dialogue about the area’s future. The aim is to identify future uses that make sense locally while supporting the interaction between nature, landscape, and use of the area. 

Among other contributions, we have helped identify and map the area’s potential, facilitated dialogue between stakeholders, and visualized possible development scenarios. Nysum Gravel Pit remains an evolving project, and the ongoing work is laying the foundation for how the area can be developed and realised in phases over time.
